Now that the year 2017 has come to an end, we tried to dig out the success report of the telugu films released. Though the success rate is not so impressive, there are still some movies which made huge impact regionally and nationally.
January 2017 started off with few releases in the first weekend which were gone unnoticeable. Then came the movie ‘Khaidi no:150’, a comeback movie of Megastar Chiranjeevi which stormed the box office. Followed by it, ‘Gautamiputra Shatakarni’ which happens to be Balakrishna’s 100th movie too did well at the box office. ‘Shatamanam Bhavati’ from Dil Raju production which under played in the beginning emerged as a huge hit and later won the National award too.
February 2017 has least number of films released in the year. Starting off with ‘Nenu Local’ which was a good commercial hit, this was Dil Raju’s second movie released in the year. The hit combo of Nagarjuna and Raghavendra Rao who came with ‘Om Namo Venkatesaya’ didn’t work this time. Young director Sankalp Reddy surprised the industry with his ‘Ghazi‘ which has Rana Daggubati in the lead role. Sai Dharam Tej’s ‘Winner’ disappointed.
March 2017 has not much success rate as almost all the movies released fell flat. Vijay Devarakonda’s ‘Dwaraka’, Manoj’s ‘Gunturodu’, Raj Tarun’s ‘Kittu Unnadu Jagratha’, etc didn’t perform well. Pawan Kalyan’s ‘Katamarayudu’ is the biggest movie this month which just remained as an average fare. Venkatesh’s ‘Guru‘ performed decently. Puri Jagannath’s ‘Rogue’ was a huge disappointment.
April 2017 is the month with extremes in terms of success. There are 12 straight telugu releases this month and 11 out of them are swept away clean. And then came the mammoth ‘Baahubali 2‘ at the end of the month. The impact made by this movie regionally and nationally is huge. This is the first Indian movie to collect 1000+ and 1500+ crores worldwide and made the whole nation look towards Tollywood. This movie is successful in bringing the largest number of audience to theatres. This month can be said as a most eventful month of the year.
May 2017 has again 12 releases. Nikhil’s ‘Keshava’, Rahul’s ‘Venkatapuram’ created buzz but they were not received well by the audience. Naga Chaitanya’s ‘Rarandoi Veduka Chudham‘ is the only movie which performed decently. Others just passed away. Sarwanand’s ‘Radha’ and Srinivas Avasarala’s ‘Babu Baga Busy’ created some buzz before the release but fell flat.
June 2017 has not much to talk about. Except ‘Ami Thumi’ and ‘Duvvada Jagannatham’, all other releases this month went unnoticeable. ‘Ami Thumi’ performed decently while ‘Duvvada Jagannatham’ got good collections and went on to become the biggest hit in Allu Arjun’s career despite bad reviews and talk. DJ happens to be the third film from Dil Raju production in the year 2017 and also the 25th film from their production.
July 2017 started off with Nani’s ‘Ninnu Kori‘ which was decent. ‘Patel SIR’, ‘Goutham Nanda’, ‘Vaisakham’, ‘Shamanthakamani’, ‘Dr Chakravarthy’ and other releases did not do well at the box office. This month has a blockbuster in the name of ‘Fidaa‘ which is again from the Dil Raju’s production house. Directed by Shekhar Kammula, the movie had Varun Tej and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles. Debutant Sai Pallavi mesmerised the audience with her electrifying performance, she overshadowed the names of Varun Tej and Shekar Kammula too. ‘Fidaa’ is said to have collected on par with big star’s film.
August 2017 is another month in this year which got shook by ‘Arjun Reddy‘. This movie not only surprised the industry in terms of content and its making but also in economics. Arjun Reddy did something great to Tollywood what Baahubali did to Indian Cinema. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, this movie is an achievement in cinematic excellence and a game-changer which the Telugu audience had not witnessed for a longtime. Vijay Devarakonda’s splendid performance gained him super stardom and looks like he might compete the big league too. It’s said to have collected more than 5 times of its actual budget. ‘Arjun Reddy’ is the most talked about movie in this year by other industries too besides ‘Baahubali-2’ . Rana’s ‘Nene Raju Nene Mantri’ and ‘Jaya Janaki Nayaka’ are also the hit movies and performed well at the box-offices while ‘Anando Brahma‘ also got good reviews and mouth talk. Nithin’s ‘LIE’, Krishna Vamsi’s ‘ Nakshatram’ , ‘Darshakudu’ from Sukumar’s production disappointed big time. Others doesn’t need mentioning.
September 2017 started off with Balakrishna’s ‘Paisa Vasool’ in the direction of Puri Jagannath which is a disaster. ‘Yuddham Sharanam’, ‘Meda Meeda Abbayi’, ‘Kathalo Rajakumari’, ‘Vellipomaakey’, ‘Sri Valli’ and other releases fell flat without any impact. Mahesh’s ‘SPYder’ which was released amidst of huge expectations went on to become a huge disappointment. ‘Jai Lava Kusa’ performed well at box office and has got great apreciation for NTR for his terrific performance. Sarvanand’s ‘Mahanubhavudu‘ is a decent hit and got decent collections.
October 2017 has 11 releases and out of them only 3 are worth mentioning. ‘Raju Gari gadhi 2‘ got decent collections. ‘Raja The Great’ which is like a comeback film for Ravi Teja went on to become good hit commercially and is the biggest hit in his career. ‘Vunnadhi Okate Zindagi’ remained an average fare.
November 2017 is a dull month with almost all the movies showing least impact except ‘PSV Garuda Vega’ and ‘Mental Madhilo’. ‘Garuda Vega’, directed by Praveen Sattaru became perfect comeback for Rajasekhar and performed well at the box office. Raj Kandukuri’s production ‘Mental Madhilo’ has got positive reviews and mouth talk all over, audience loved the performances of lead pair Sree Vishnu and Nivetha Pethuraj. The film is a decent hit.
December 2017 has highest number of straight telugu films. Out of 19(till Dec 22), only 3 are worth talking about. Sumanth’s ‘Malli Raava’ with soothing music remained an average fare. Nani’s ‘MCA’ is commercially going very good. Akhil’s ‘Hello‘ is getting good talk and is also performing good at the box office. Allu Sirish’s ‘Okka Kshanam’ and Sunil’s ‘2 Countries’ are yet to be released in this month.
Apart from these movies, there are some dubbed movies which made some impact during this year 2017.
‘16: Every Detail Counts’, ‘Sachin: A Billion Dreams’, ‘Marakathamani’, ‘Khakhi’, ‘Gruham’.
One has to accept that 2017 belongs to Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Vijay Devarakonda for giving the audience a true cinematic experience. And also Dil Raju needs a special mention for producing 6 films which is appreciable. Though the films like ‘Khaidi No:150’, ‘Nenu Local’, ‘DJ’, ‘Jaya Janaki Nayaka’, ‘Ninnukori’, ‘Mahanubavudu’, ‘Raja The Great’, ‘MCA’ satisfied the trade units, content wise they are just mashups which doesn’t really help Tollywood to feel proud of its content and no where they inspire aspiring film-makers to come out with great stuff.
This year 2017 is also a ‘not so great year’ for Tollywood with only 14% success rate. But it has seen some young distinct talents.
Directors : Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Sankalp Reddy, Vivek Athreya
Actors : Vijay Devarakonda, Sai Pallavi, Anupama, Nivetha Pethuraj
Music : Prashanth R Vihari, Shakthi Kanth Karthick
Hope we see more great talents foraying Tollywood in 2018 to beat the monotonous stuff and make their way.
